In Small we will be producing B&W images created using medium and large format camera, these images will then be printed in the darkroom using enlargers onto photographic paper.
In our small groups we will be allocated a square mile from an Ordnance Survey map of Bristol. This square mile will be where we produce our images. We will be striving to capture a 'Sense Of Place' within this square mile. This sense of place can be attained/represented in many different ways: researching the history of the area, focusing on a certain landmark, business etc. that is individual to the area, creating an artistic response to the feel/vibe of the area and so on.
We have been advised to scout the area to find subject matter, to look for interesting stories/places/objects etc., to talk to locals in order to uncover a deeper insight and to gain more of a feel for the area. We must also do external research, looking in books and online to find of things that you can't find on the ground. All of this will enable us to create a more true representation of the area.
We will be exploring 3 frames of photography while undertaking this project:
Landscape
Architecture
Environmental
Brief 1 - Architectural
Produce an architectural image which reflects the concept of 'Space' in the square mile.
Image Requirements:
- 1 X Large Format image, presented as a 12 X 16 B&W image
- The image must be a correct representation of perspective in regards to the architectural building, this will be achieved by correctly using the tilt and shift capabilities of the camera.
Written Requirements:
- Detail why you have chosen the building, what it say's about the area and why you shot it in your chosen style.
Brief 2 - Landscape
Produce 3 images that represent the idea of 'Place' in the area, these images must be supported by scouting and external research.
Image Requirements:
- 3 X Medium Format images, presented on 10 X 8, landscape format.
Research Requirements:
- Detail why you chose the three images, what link them, what they say about the area, who influenced you and how did their influence change the images.
Brief 3 - Environmental Portraiture
Shoot various people and groups within the area, which local/synonyms to it.
Image Requirements:
- 1 X Medium format images, presented on 12 X 16, landscape format.
Research Requirements:
- Detail why you have photographed your final print and their relevance to the area, who influenced you and what their influence was on the style of the final image.
